Grit guards are ideal but I would certainly second the recommendation for the "2 bucket method" (as well as waffle drying towel(s)).
In the first bucket you have your shampoo solution. Dip your mitt in, and wash a small section of the car. Then rinse your mitt in the second bucket, which just contains water (not shampoo).
The idea is that you are rinsing the mitt each time, so you dip a relatively clean mitt into the shampoo to pick up more solution, instead of putting loads of dirt back in there and making the shampoo bucket very dirty very quickly.
Grit guards go at the bottom of the bucket and helps keep the grit/dirt at the bottom and away from your mitt.
Takes a bit of getting used to, to start with you will probably keep going for the wrong bucket (or maybe that's just me lol), but worth persevering with.
Bobby Foam

Personally I would add an extra rinse stage :

Bobby Stevie maybe you need different coloured buckets

Or to confuse you even more try some ONR (Optimum No Rinse), I swear by this stuff now, use it 95% of the time
well this is all went up **** creek
moved house on friday, even remembered to go by my cleaning stuff (bought cheap first time round)
got all unpacked over friday/saturday, came to sunday and i thought "yeah i will wash the car"
wondered around that house for 10 minutes with hose pipe in hand and it appears we dont have an outside tap :cursing:
so the most i can do is get it washed locally and then detail it at home
never mind lol
Aargh, bummer ! It might not very expensive to get an outside tap installed though, is that an option ? e.g. somewhere handy outside by some pipes that you could put one in ?
possibly, only issue is its rented and is a pretty new house so not sure if the landlord will let us do that,
plus our lawn is the size of a small bedroom, so may not warrant it
an even bigger kick in the teeth is the misses wants me to move into her new house.........................its a fricking flat, so no tap, no garage,
why cant people buy proper houses that ahve big gardens, garages and taps!!!!!
