Definitive LSD Identification!!
Definitive LSD Identification!!
Quote:I think I found there may be a way to tell the difference between an open diff and an LSD diff without taking the rear cover off. Underneath the diff, when you jack up the car, there will be a sticker that says M96 or M85. So far only one other guy and myself have confirmed that our open diffs have M96 on them but we'll need some more people to inspect their cars to confirm the assumption. Where you are looking is right under the nose of the diff where the pinion goes in. Please post what your door number says (BO2A=Open, BO2B=LSD, BO2C=LSD) and what your diff says (M85 or M96), thanks!
.
Here is the information we gathered. Now if you have an open diff in your IS and want to install an OEM LSD differential, you know what to look for!

Gathered information. (Confirmed)
1. M96 sticker equals open Diff.
(auto or manual)
2. M98 sticker equals Locking diff. (LSD)
(auto 3.9)
3. M85 sticker equals Locking diff. (LSD)
(manual 3.7)

SAtolen from My.is over in the US, it appears you can identify a LSD without opening it up:

Interesting !
However, I presume this is specific to the IS300, which has a different ratio for the diff. I would guess that the IS200 diffs have a different code, if this sticker is even there (surely those who have looked at diffs at the scrappy would have noticed a big sticker :confused1: ).
Also, auto IS200s don't have an LSD, do they ? Sounds like the auto IS300 can do though, in the US at least.
I wonder if the diff ratios vary between countries ?
For example, the manual IS200 diff is 3.9, and the auto IS200 diff is 4.1. The auto IS 300 diff is 3.6 according to the online manual. This doesn't tie up with what they've listed above.
Looking at the parts lists, it seems that the diff ratios do indeed vary between countries.
The US IS300 auto has a diff ratio of 3.9, as the info from my.IS says. But the European IS300 auto has a diff ratio of 3.6.
The parts list also suggests that the auto IS200 didn't have an LSD, even as an option (as I think we already knew).
Can't you also tell by the numbers on the vin plate???
Yeah but I think the point was to help identify it if you've just got the diff on its own, with no car attached - e.g. on a shelf at at a scrappy.
so what would the result be if we was to put an american lsd instead of the ones we have already?
is it like 3.6 turns for the wheels to catch up with the non spinning wheel
is300_dino so what would the result be if we was to put an american lsd instead of the ones we have already?
