steviewevie The big problem is that it was designed a very long time ago, when it was never imagined that everyone would have a computer at home with an IP address, companies with thousands of IP addresses, phones, washing machines etc, etc. And they've nearly completely run out of addresses. Even though there are a few billion possibilities, as you say, the way they've been allocated (in large blocks) means they haven't really been used in an optimal way.

Ian, that stuff in your first post, I did an exam where I had to be able to work out subnetting in binary in my head a few years ago! So not sure that qualifies as useless info
Although your info is a little out of date as it is pre-CIDR (classless inter-domain routing) which is what the internet has been running on for the last 15 years or so.
