Not sure if this is a dumb question, but can you solder mains cabling as I've only ever seen electricians using connector blocks?

Need to extend some wires for some wall lights as the stupid electrician didn't leave enough length to actually be able to connect them to a light fitting so wanted to know if I can solder an extra bit of wire on and seal with heatshrink or should I just use a connector block........

i would have thought soldering would have been better. connector blocks are just used for ease.

dont quote me on that though

NO YOU CAN'T

Solder is NOT for mains cable.

Rabster Use Yellow crimps far easier .....

Is that these? http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Modu...&U=strat15

But then technically any form of connection used with low voltage electronics will still apply to mains cable?

2tongues NO YOU CAN'T

Solder is NOT for mains cable.

Oh thanks, perhaps I'll just stick with the connector blocks then......

Just for info, is there a particular reason? High voltage or something?

Potential heat build up on the connection. Solder is suitable for low voltage things. Mains cable is rated at 13+ amps and thats a large load for solder to safely handle.

2tongues is correct ( must be a sparky?) Use 15A connector block, ensure non of the conductor is exposed from the connector block, fit the green and yellow sleeving on the earth wire and make sure you tighten the screws well.
It's a good job it's not in the bathroom or kitchen as you cannot even do this in these rooms anymore unless you are part P qualified.
BTW if the electrician left the cable too short get him back to do it.
