the fella I bumped has agreed to let me pay so i'll be typing a letter saying that I have covered all costs and getting signatures, I dunno if the letter will be worth the paper its written on but any other suggestions of what I might do to cover myself would be good

Don't admit liability in writing though, that would open you up to a world of "personal injury claim" pain.......

I think that's probably a decent idea, something that states that everything has been repaired and case closed - might be worth getting a solicitor to write it for you so everything's covered.
