How does it work exactly, if I declare SORN does the car have to be off the road for a set time or can I bring it back on the road whenever I like (obviously by purchasing a new tax disc at that point)?

I think its more a case of when the tax runs out you dont have the 'do nothing' option anymore, so you either re tax it or get it of the road until you tax it

Dont think so mate, not as far as im aware, you can take it off the road for as little or as long as you want, as you say when you want to use it again you just buy the tax.

05-07-2017, 02:43 AM #3i think if its declared sorn then yes you can change it to go back on the road but you will need to take a valid MOT and insurance cert to the post office. they will then issue the tax disc.
It doesnt make financial sense to stop you bringing it back on the road whenever you want

This might be a silly question, but how do I get the car MOTd if it's declared off the road? Or is it the same as when it's expired, it's legal to drive it to the MOT station?

05-07-2017, 03:19 AM #6yes if you can prove that you are going directly to the test station you should be ok but prebook it just in case so then you have some sort of proof that you are going for the mot. but it will need to be insured to drive it on the road in the first place. (no getting around that one) but mot should be fine.

I'm sure I saw on one of those police shows though that if its failed already on something really serious you aren't allowed to drive it and if it's failed already there's no days of grace like you used to get away with

While I'm on the topic, the car that this is in reference to is my sister's mini - she's currently studying abroad and therefore her car lives in the garage. She's back at the mo on holidays, but when she's off again at the end of the month, she won't be back until next April, so thought it might make sense to make it SORN.
The tax quite conveniently runs out at the end of August, so planning to get it serviced in a few weeks and then park it up as it always has been. My only concern is that it will be unused for the longest period so far (almost 8 months) so is it ok to just leave the car like that? Or is it better to keep it taxed and take it out every so often to keep it running?
