DaveEdin That's beyond sick, it's premeditated murder in my opinion!
What if it was a family car with kids in it that this happened to?

You might have a point on the speed thing chri5, but consider this:
It could've been the emergency services it caught. An ambulance doing 70 or 80 would have been perfectly legit along there...
And a blowout at 30/40 wouldn't be a picnic either... Whoever put the nails out needs caught and put away. The driver died, and the other 2 guys are pretty bad off as well, one's almost been paralysed (apparently he's getting some feeling back in his arms)
Good point about emergency services. But it is a 40mph road, a blowout even at 40mph could easily through you into a barrier, and given that it would be more likely for traffic to be doing 50mph that makes it still quite serious.
It's an insane thing to do, and I stand by the fact that whoever did that is clearly mentally ill.
2nd'd on mentally ill.
Although another thought was it just somebody being spiteful with wanton stupidity without thinking of the outcome???
Due to where the road is???
Bit like how kids put trees on train lines???
ive read the whole thread on fordpassion
and notice a guy called warren getting alot of stick, which is a shame because although his comments are probably a bit blunt and harsh he is right.
we all speed from time to time, but this incident needs to be taken as a very very stark lesson to everyone that thinks its safe to do this on public roads wether its a fun sunday morning blast, or your streetracing
At the end of the day wether it was 40mph or closer to 90mph as it most likely was, the guy was gunna have an accident because of the screws,
the only question is how bad would the injuries of been were he doing the limit??
so in essence
I dont agree with his excessive speed
I dont agree with him doing such speeds with mates in the car
I certainly dont agree witht he screws
I push the limit everyday, but i live by a few simple rules
1) i am the only occupant ever, no questions asked, you want a lift i drive sinsibly
2) i am not in any shape or form going to injure another motorist / pedestrian / whatever
3) trees and walls can be replaced, lives cant
i take risks but i calculate them to the enth degree, still not justifiable, but the only person im hurting is myself, i can live with that
had the this driver survived could he live know his mate was paralysed for life?
has there been no central reservation what if he hit a family car coming the other way?
forget the fact somone put screws in the road, what if it was a freak accident, or his tyre just gave out under load
so many variables as to what caused it, but the speed decided the outcome

Yes, It may sound harsh, but I agree with Carpediem, If this man was going 30 on a 30 road, they consequences (may have been as bad) but I don't think there would have been a driver killed, and passengers in very serious conditions.
If I could drive, and I had passengers underage, I would drive sensibly, well, if I had passengers over age, and they did not feel comfortable with me going faster for a bit of fun, I would not do it either, but if I knew they had been in positions in the past, where they liked a bit of speed sometimes, then I would go fast, obviously going careful, because going fast doesn't mean you aren't going careful, even though, I would only do it, when the conditions and time are right, if I had a free open motorway, that would be the time and place.

[COLOR="Indigo"]This conversation recirculates so often, the nature of car lovers I guess. No-one ever sets out to maim, injure or kill someone and I doubt many of us set out to smash up our cars today.. but we are all at the controls of killer machines and so many things are out of our control. I did not buy a 3.0 litre twin turbo supra to drive at 10mph everywhere and I am as guilty as anyone for wanting to experience what my car offers. I would like to think I was well prepared, I've driven lots of cars in lots of circumstances, I've raced cars on tracks and I've been properly taught on skid patches and advanced driving centres. I would like to think my reactions were quick and my car is well maintained.. but .. if you've ever hit a patch of diesel on the road you'll know that with the best will in the world it's all futile.
Nobody loves their car more than I love mine (no, you don't lol) and on that basis passengers are safer in my car than outside it cos I will do just about anything to not dent, scratch or break it and therefore anyone in it too. With all the training in the world, until it happens not one of us can be 100% sure we will react correctly in the event of a blowout, skid, potential crash etc and we are all a potential threat to others in some way. That said, there are degrees.. I firmly believe that anyone who drives under the influence of drink or drugs, who knows their vehicle is unsafe or broken, who is really tired, reading a paper, putting on makeup or the whole long list of other sins is risking your life, my life and everyone else who they may skid into and it's wrong.. even if it's just a dent why should my life be affected by someone elses negligence. I don't believe any of us really start learning to drive until we have had our first accident, near miss, wake up call or had someone very close have such an experience. The circumstances you're talking about here though are wilfull and intentional and there is no doubt the outcome will never be a good one and if it's found to be kids I still don't believe they couldn't grasp the possibilities. (Although, the indestructibility of the characters in movies does not give a real life comprehension to the still learning)
Do you find these stories have actually had an impact on your driving? I do. In Milton Keynes, we have a lot of 60mph grid roads with overhead walkways, ten years ago when I came to town I never paid them a moments attention but since reading stories of kids throwing bricks off motorway bridges and causing multiple car pile ups I find I have a very different subconscious approach and I never noticed I was doing it until a friend commented. When I am driving towards one of these bridges, if there are people on it.. Kids especially always stop to look at my car and I find I slow down and try to approach when there is a gap in oncoming traffic so if anyone throws anything off the bridge I have somewhere to go. I also create an even bigger gap between me and the car in front so I can speed up when I am so close I can no longer see what they are doing up there and I think I actually stop breathing for a moment as I come out the other side until I know nothing has dropped on my car. Im cautious when approching footbridges aswell, ive seen little shits throwing stuff from them :Shooting::Shooting::Shooting:
^^ they have a profound effect on me, i feel so bad for the people involved
which is why i drive like i do now and only take calculated risks,
when i hammer the b roads on a sunday to go fishing i get posed with all sorts of scenarios, the main being
I'm approaching a corner a speed, ive noted the corner from quite a way back, and i know the road sort of okay, the very first thing i check is it blind or open?
if its open and i can see nothing is coming the other way, no pedestrians walking dogs, no hrose riders etc, then i ascertain i can go at it,
if its blind and i cant tell whats coming or what could be round the corner, i back off as i dont see the risk being worth it.
once ive done that i think about road conditions, my speed, the camber, the wieght difference of my car witht he fishing gear etc.
If im honest i never push it to the ragged edge as trying to think about all of the above in such a short space of time is really hard, and i am not capable as a trained racing driver etc, but i already know this
