Mazda RX8 Ignition Coil Failure Symptoms
The coil packs have a tendency to over heat which will result in a reduction of the strength of the spark, and eventually complete failure. However as there are two plugs per rotor the engine will continue to work with some degree of reduced performance. It is important that this is spotted early and rectified, as poor ignition results in un-burnt fuel entering the catalyst which will eventually destroy it. It is also suspected that long term running with faulty coils reduces the effectiveness of the oil lubrication in the camber, scoring the rubbing surface which leads to reduced compression. This usually manifests itself as a harsh rattle over 6000rpm, reduced power especially when warm, and difficulty starting the engine when it is hot. The only cure when it reaches that stage is a new engine.
ad:ad:ad:The symptoms will vary depending on which coils have failing, but the subtle ones are the ones to look:-
1. Starting in about the same time, but just a little hesitancy as it catches.
2. Sounding slightly louder at low revs first thing in the morning.
3. A rougher power delivery between 3000-4000rpm, but seemingly ok through the rest of the revs.
4. More popping on the overrun (lifting off the throttle at high revs) than normal.
There are more severe symptoms when the coils have failed:-
1. Difficulty starting.
2. Inability to hold idle, with either the revs varying considerably, or stalling.
3. Very rough running throughout the rev range.
4. Very loud exhaust.

The RX-8 ignition system is powered by 4 coil packs. It was originally intended that these would last the lifetime of the car, but it has turned out that they can last as few as 20,000-30,000 miles, and replacement every 3 years or 3rd service along with the spark plugs would be a wise precaution. Coils are available from Mazda or far more cheaply from several other Mazda traders that can be found on the web.
