Every year I seem to get myself into some sort of DIY Project.

Last year I managed for the first time ever, put down paving slabs in my front yard. With this in mind, I want do the same in my back yard.

This is my back yard (well photo taken about 4 years ago)

The paint has all flaked off and the concrete is slightly cracked but nothing major.

I started digging the concrete out to find underneath it is tarmac !

Is it possible just to lay paving down directly on top? as it is a secure and stable base?

What do you think?

Are you talking laying slabs over Tarmac? If it is as stable as you say, then shouldn't be an issue. Just give yourself a good quality bed of 4:1 mortar mix to lay the slabs on and you should have the perfect finish. Otherwise you are talking digging the Tarmac up, back filling, compacting and then laying the slabs..perhaps the purists way, but much more involved.

it looks like its quite a thick slab, so I see no reason why not. Sorry when you said about the tarmac I assumed you had dig it all out.
