Well here is the story of my weekend and the issues of my two front tyres... I have learned something this weekend and I will be happy if it helps at least one person in the future! (Or maybe I have been stupid and should have already known)

Well I came to my car on Friday evening after work and noticed that my front drivers side tyre was flat. I nipped it to the tyre shop at the unit next door and asked them to have a look and fix it for me. The tyres have only been on 11months so I assumed I had picked up a puncture and expected them just to repair it and be on my way.

Well this is what we found......

The tyre had been cracking on the inner and outer edge, and it had finally given up and just let out all of the air! The rubber had perished on the inner and outer edges of both front tyres.I wasn't best pleased. As I said earlier thay had only been on a year and covered 8k miles. They had never been run flat and they were wearing evenly. And what if it had let the air out while cruising down the motorway. Pic showing the even wear of the tread....

The garage were horrified and immediatley looked for a manurfacturing date (which is where my learning begins) I didnt even know a tyre had a date of manurfacture on it! He then said that they dont fit tyres in their garage that are older than 2 years and they said tyres shouldnt be fitted if they are over 4 years old. So when they found they were made in January 2005 and were 6 years old when fitted to my car they could understand why they looked how they did.

The dating of a tyre is apparently very simple, but I didn't know! (01 - Jan, 05 - 2005)

The next day I rang the tyre shop I got these from and asked them to double check the date I got the tyres fitted, He confirmed August last year so I headed straight round to have an arguement! I explained the situation and he began saying tyres dont last forever, slating the setup, lowness and camber of my back wheels. When i told him they came off the front and were alligned after the suspension changed a month ago he went very quiet and blamed the amount of sun we have had..... (till I pointed out we hadnt really had any!)

To cut a half an hour argument short he is going to fit 2 new tyres FOC tomorrow. Epic winning!!

Sorry to have gone on and on a bit but it has really wound me up how some people try to rip people off with things like this. And if by writing this thread it helps at least one person check the date on the tyres being fitted to their car i will be happy!

I didn't have the receipt anymore so I had to make him admit he had fitted them and on which date and then tell him my problem. To be honest I didn't expect him to replace them for free. saying that, he may be replacing them but I wont be using him again that is for sure!

Shocking. I found similar (and found out about the datestamp) when changing the tyres on the Fiesta last year. The difference there is, they were tyres I'd had fitted in 2006 (before I sold it the first time)!
