After seeing the ones Stav and others have done, I really wanted to get a motorised nav and mod it with a TomTom or whatever, but after buying one and looking into it, realising my complete and utter lack of electronics know-how, and needing the money that would need spending, spending on other things, I sold it on.

Now I can't stop the bug biting to get another and try and go through with it!

Plan has slightly changed from what I was gonna do - not gonna bother with a stand alone TomTom like originally planned, but rather I'd like to graft in a chinese touchscreen GPS thing that runs WinCE, and install TomTom on that and also plumb in a reverse cam - very much like the one Paddy and Mattlaw built up.

Sooooo, first question - is the later 7" nav unit actually a true 7"? or is it smaller/larger? Cos the 5" is actually 5.3 or 5.4" or something like that, so my first wonder is if the 7" housing will actually take a 7" screen in it?????

Of its not 7" you could cut it bigger anyway?

There's one eBay now for £50 with the bigger screen.

Nicely spotted Stav - it's a bit battered though. Maybe it's possible to sand and paint, but don't know if I'd get a nice enough match in colour and texture

I tried to colour match, but couldn't get it right. In the end I sent mine off to a company that does car interior restoration, and they got it spot-on.

What sort of cost was that? Because if it's more than the saving would be over buying a non battered one, might as well buy a non battered one!

Sod it, got it bought - £40 plus p&p. can't see getting another at that price, at least the 7" variant. Now I just gotta get the right GPS thing and start a new thread asking how the hell I wire it up, haha!

Picked it up from the post office today - not in the greatest of shape (one of the mounting lugs for the motorised screen housing is broken and needs glueing, and there's a bit of scratching to it - but that's all as described, to be fair), but it's a good enough base to start with, I hope (provided the motor and buttons still function)

Thinking this for the screen : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200841809155?s...1423.l2649

Cheap enough, and seems to be the same as nearly all the others on there. Just gotta figure out if I can actually run TomTom on it firstly, and if so, if I can get it to autoboot directly into TomTom, and then finally see if it will take a cam on the back for reverse, and auto-switch when engaged.

After all that, gotta figure out the wiring!

Wonder if Mattlaw wants to come stay at my house for a few days? LOL

Lol where you based? I could help out, you do realise you'll probably have to pull the sat nav to pieces to get it all in

Miiiiiiiiiiles from you, down in Essex (not far from Rabster)

Not too worried about pulling the GPS apart - Paddy's thread was the inspiration for this, so saw in that it needs to be ripped open. My main concern is being able to wire it in for the power and auto on/off like you managed with that one.

I also need to figure out how to run TomTom Navigator on it!
