Hi

I went out for a drive today and when I got to my friend's I popped the bonnet and there seemed to be oil everywhere - it was coming from the breather pipe on the cam cover.

(the hose is a little short and doesn't go all the way into the air box)

What does this mean? Is it blow-by? Should I be worried?

Thanks

Stix.

Dont want to worry you, but mine did this when my piston rings cracked from running lean.

Just to add...I had a LOT of oil though. If it looks like it was just a very light misting then its probably just blow-by.

the lexus engine is pretty bad for this, you end up with white sludge on the oil cap as well as though your headgasket has gone but it hasnt, just get a catch can and youll be fine. (though on mine i just have a long pipe that goes to under car lol)

I did the same for a while, but was told that vacuum is required in order to pull the oil out of the crank case?

On another note, those catch cans that we both bought from eBay (the clear plastic ones) were really rubbish. I got a bit of oil in mine to start with, but then nothing for ages. When I pulled off my valve covers (on my E55 AMG), they were both pooled with oil that hadn't been sucked out.

yeah i did some reading after i bought it and never fitted it, think Toxo said it was too small originally.

may look at teeing in a feed from the inlet then with a one wasy valve to pull it out

The only other thing I'll add is that I think the engine might be using a lot of oil.

I'm waiting till the engine is stone cold in the morning to double check.

I've always wondered if you could use the exhaust to pull it out? Weld a bung to the downpipe at an angle, so the exhaust fumes create a kind of suction. Then any oil just ends up getting burned by the exhaust?

Well it's definitely leaking or burning loads of it then as mine doesn't use a drop in the 10K it does between oil changes.
