How to fit a Short shifter on a R33 gtr/Gtst
Right, here goes, a guide to replacing your standard shift, to a short shift!
This is on an R33 gtst. Should take no longer than an hour to do this, tops!
Tools required: -
-Long nose pliers.
-Flat head screwdriver.
-Posi screwdriver.
-Hammer.
-5mm allen key.
-file/sandpaper.
First remove the gearknob and surround. unplug the connectors on the cigarette lighter.
Then, undo the four screws around the gearstick,
Pull off the rubber gaitor and surround.
Next you see this, remove the cable tie around the bottom of the rubber gaitor, and pull up to show the underneath, where you find two sets of circlips.
Remove the larger of the two circlips, i prised the outside one out using a screwdriver, flick the edge and out and work your way round,
Once it "pings" out, you can then pull out the gearstick.with the other circlip and gearstick all in one.
It then look like this!
Next pull out the middle section, mine was a little stiff so used so pliers to ease it out. Beneath this is a funny washer, almost spring like, take this out too,
The washer/spring.
Now the fun bit!!
Take your new shiny(in my case) Japspeed short shift kit, take the aluminium circle,
Place it in the hole where spring came out, mine needed a gentle tap in, its a perfect fit once its in.
Then refit the washer, and the plastic section as shown below.
The tricky bit, on the end of my new shifter section, the nylon part was ever so slightly bigger, needs just a bit of filing to make it fit or get the old one off the original shifter.
****TIP****
Remove the plastic section and check the nylon part at the bottom of the shifter fits first as its a bit tricky to get in the hole! once you have checked it fits ok, take out the new shifter and re-fit the plastic section.
Uncrew the new shifter and place and nylon circle so it sits on top of the "ball" at the end of the new shifter, make sure the groove is sitting downwards, you'll find out why later on!
Now place the new shifter into the hole, this is bit fiddly!!! You dont need the old circlips so dont worry about those.
Next, place the square metal section over the gear shifter, grab the semi circular parts from the new kit, and place underneath metal surround. screw together using the allen bolts provided, You will need a 5mm allen key for this.
Repeat on both sides, and do up all 4 screws.
Take off the old rubber gaitor from the standard shifter, will need a bit of gentle persuasion,(or a bit of a slice with a knife!) and place over the new shifter, although this is not necessary but i thought id replace it for a bit of sound deadening.
Replace the other gearstick surround, using the four screws you took out.
Replace the gearknob and surround. Now take it for a spin and enjoy!!
Ill have done fuel pump upgrade one but that's already been done, check out my heads up display one. The unit works really well.
