Photographing the Northern Lights
Photographing the Northern Lights
I'm off to Iceland on Monday and with a bit of luck I will have an chance to see the Northern lights.
Just curious if anybody could suggest some settings to give me a head start. I've invested in a cheap tripod for long exposure and loads of batteries as the cold will kill battery life.
Camera is a Nikon D40X with an 18-55mm kit lens. Nothing special but i'm hoping to be able to take some decent photos with it.
no idea about cameras, but looking forward to the pics hope you get some good ones mate have a good holiday

Well the trip was a success as I managed to see the lights. The first time they were a bit weak but the second time the sky just lit up! Some of the photos came out well, others not so well.
The first night photos seemed to come out well.
The second night the images came out really grainy. Could this be down to there being more ambient light? The moon was out, we were near street lights and in sight of Reykjavik.
Not a relatively high ISO for that much grain tbf... I've no idea?
