Two questions:

If I swap the GTE rods and keep the FE pistons will I keep the standard compression ratio?

Am I correct in thinking it's the rods that are the point of failure above 250ish hp and not the pistons?

yes and yes, its the cup/curve of the piston that helps reduce pressure, the rings are more likey to fail than the piston itself as its solid metal, if the rings go it will bash the piston against the wall and score the block and the weaker rods could warp and possibly snap
