Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone knows of any Toyota's that have longer 6th gears that can be fitted to an IS200 gearbox.

I'd like to make 6th into a "proper" cruising gear, currently at 70 it revs around 3k and I'd like to lower that.

Any info would be great.

Thanks

Stix.

Contact Tony Wood at Woodsport he does this short of thing for MR2's.

He extends the 5th Gear on the MR2 and also does 6th Gear work on the Celica box so may be worth a call.

Other wise contact Dave Ashcroft at Ash Croft Transmissions he maybe able to put something together for you.

I've already got that saved in my eBay and it would work but it would make all the gears longer, I'm very happy with all the other gears just not 6th! Thanks though.

a 4.1 diff will make it worse, or identical as that's the ratio of an IS200 anyway isn't it? You want the 3.7 diff from an IS300 if you were going that route surely? Even if you got 6th dropped to a 0.7 gear rather than a 0.89 it's still sitting at about 2800-3000rpm at 70 depending on wheel size.

Assuming you've got 23" total wheel height (so 18" +2.5" thick tyre) with the 4.1 diff doing a true speed of 70mph you're revving at about 3700 rpm in 6th with the standard 0.89 gearing, if you can get that dropped to a 0.7 or even a 0.65 gear you'd be doing 2900rpm or 2700rpm respectively. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is below the 1g-fe's peak torque efficiency isn't it? Even with the extra grunt from the supercharger I think it would start asking to be dropped back into 5th or actually have the potential to be worse on fuel. It would be better for cruising at 80-85 though Wink

Also: The S15 J160 gearbox (which is internally "the same" as the IS200 J160) has a 6th gear ratio of 0.767:1 so this may be a cheap option if you want to drop it a little bit.

edit: repeating the above maths with the S15 6th gear gives you an RPM of 3200 at a true speed of 70mph using the 4.1 IS200 diff, which is 500rpm lower than the standard 6th gear.

I was just reading that earlier, 500rpm would do me - I know it sounds silly but what I want to stop doing is looking at the rev counter and thinking "****** hell I must still be in 5th!" And then realising nope the car just revs its tits off in 6th.

Quick question for the maths wizz Wink would the s15 gear increae or decrease top speed?

The other thing I was reading was that the S2000 gearbox has carbon fibre syncros rather than brass and apparently they give a "nicer engagement" - not that I have a problem with it in the first place!

Stay away from the S2000 gearbox, that's cars ratio's are setup for that engine.

In anything else they just would not work, I can tell you that from personal experience.
