Exhaust legality
Exhaust legality
Just been doing a bit of browsing on the old tinterweb. And came across this page.
http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/modified-cars...ed-to-know
And found this section at the bottom quite interesting........
Exhaust system
All exhaust silencers must be maintained in a good and efficient working order. You will be breaking the law if you remove a silencer or make any modification that would make that vehicle emit a noise louder than the original exhaust before it was modified.
Can anyone clarify this for me? As I am a bit concerned about the fact I have removed a silencer from my exhaust system and it is significantly louder then standard.
Either way it refers to modifying an exhaust... most of us have replaced it not modified it. Which is perfectly fine
A what now, Rob?
Interestingly there is a part of the MOT test where the tester is supposed to fail or advise (at their discretion) if they believe a modified or non-standard exhaust to be significantly louder than stock. Which in turn means all MOT testers must know how loud all stock exhausts are, from a Fiesta to a Ferrari...
here is the link.... take a beer or coffee before and read slowly - it gets a bit technical.

I know this thread is quite old now, but my last two MOTs have had "noisy exhaust" as an advisory. The Lexus is just a back box and not even that loud but my other car has a full system and is very loud. Just advisory though, not failure.
