ADJUSTMENT OF HEADLAMPS ON MAZDA RX-8

Make sure all the tyre pressures are set correctly and there is no luggage or extra weight in the car (ideally you need to draft a friend to sit in the driver’s seat)

Put the car in front of a flat wall (or your garage door), provided your driveway is flat and level. Position the car as straight against the wall as you can, and so that the headlamps are 3m away.

Turn your dipped beam on, and cover one of the headlamps with a cloth or blanket, as you will be setting one at a time. If you have a 192 / Low Power RX-8, you will need to set the levelling switch on the dash to ‘0’.

The above picture shows the back of the lamp with the lamp removed from the car. There are 2 white plastic parts which guide a phillips screwdriver onto a winding mechanism. The upper adjustment moves the beam side to side, and the lower guide adjusts the beam up & down. These can both be accessed from inside the engine bay.

The above diagram shows the shape of the light beam on the wall (but for a Left Hand drive car, so please imagine it in mirror image). The centre point is the theoretical point where the centre of the headlamp would be projected onto the wall. The height of the centre point is the same as the height of the headlamp from the ground, so you need to get the tape measure out!

The flat part of the beam should be 30mm lower than the height of the headlamp, and the elbow point should be straight in front of the headlamp.

I suggest putting a piece of tape on the wall to show the required height of the beam. Adjust the height to the tape, and then look down the flank of the car to judge the elbow point side to side.

Once you have completed one side, place the cloth on the other side, and repeat the adjustments.

Finally, remove the cloth so that both lamps are shown and double check that the beams are of a similar height.

DONE!
