The battery could well have been killed by the cold and not storing any charge. So even though the alternator is trying to charge the battery, that might not be having any effect.

She almost certainly needs a new battery. Someone could maybe go to Halfords and buy one and take it to her ?

Or she could try getting someone to help her jump-start the car (e.g. through pushing, though in this weather a jump start with cables from another battery would probably be easer).

Is there a hill near where she is ? If she can go down the hill (e.g. with a push) she could maybe start it herself ?

ok, yes, if it's auto then you shouldn't bump-start it, no. But a jump start via battery from another car would be fine.

New battery required, methinks. If you do go to Halfords, it would be worth ringing in advance to see if the right battery is in stock. But if this is for the Lex then check out Toyota/Lexus, their batteries can often be cheaper than Halfords.

Yerh its for the lex. Shes gone to park it outside of halfords anyway as it was the safest place nearby. Somebody gave her a bump start with jump leads so all is good. Just weird how it went when the engine was still going.

thanks a lot, this can be deleted if you dont want it cluttering the forum Smile

Good news that she got to Halfords, fingers crossed they have got the right size of battery there. Halfords will usually fit it for you too, though I guess they might be pretty busy there at the moment !

No need to delete, posts asking for help are one of the reasons this forum is here, and it's nice to see that she's got out of the worst of the situation (i.e. just being stuck by the roadside).

If the car started straight away when it was jump started then I can't see why it would have died when the engine was already running.........does anyone know why that could have happened if it was just a dead battery at fault?

I presumed the engine had either been turned off for some reason or it had stalled ?

steviewevie I presumed the engine had either been turned off for some reason or it had stalled ?

I got the impression it died while it was running, but good point that could have been the case. As an auto it couldn't have stalled unless there was another problem somewhere else.
