Hi guys,

I have been hiding a secret. Before I sold my Honda S2000 (with the hairdresser jokes) I had actually already bought my replacement car a few months prior but it looked so different to what it does now.

This is what it looks like now:

It took ALOT of work to get it to this stage.

This the story of its journey to where it is now. I didn’t want to reveal it until I felt it was ready.

I bought (through my friend Nads at Auto-Serve) a Mitsubishi Evo MR FQ-320. It is a mint low-mileage example (only 20K on the clock) and from factory pushes out 326bhp. The MR models have big improvements over the non MRs with improvements to the electronic 4WD system, to the ACD (Active Centre Differential) + Super AYC (Active Yaw Control) handling systems, together with Bilstein suspension which is not rock hard. The MR engines have stronger cams tuned for competition use with emphasis on power output in the mid-to-high speed bands. The car also comes as standard with Recaro full-bucket front seats, carbon-fibre dashboard and black headlamp reflectors. A fantastic base car!

People should know however from my past cars that I like to make them special and on this one I really have gone all out!! I wanted to make this into one of the best street Evos around so with a lot of help from my mates at Auto-Serve in Oldham we got to work.

Handling

Evos handle so well as standard that for once I didn’t really need to do a great deal. The only problem is that the front is SO HIGH as standard so after some research the first step was to lower the car all round but I didn’t want it to be too low (it is a road-going rally car after all!)

Nads lowered the car all around on Eibach Springs. These are progressively wound springs which actually make the ride a touch softer around town but stiffen up a lot more then stock springs when you are cornering fast.
They lower by 25mm at the front and the back by around 15mm which I think is a perfect drop. It just looks the part and the car is still fine over bumps.
The only other thing I did was to buy a Whiteline Rear AntiRoll bar and set it to the medium setting. This was to reduce any roll and to make the turn in sharper. Have to be careful however – set it too hard and it can induce oversteer.

For a steet car I think this is a great suspension setup and works well.

Performance

I wanted this car to be the most powerful car I have ever had. I have had an Aristo which top end would probably be quicker when it eventually gets there but I don’t drive around at 120mph+ so was pointless to me. I was interested in instant acceleration and minimal lag.

The items I bought were:

3" Milltek Cat back exhaust system (quietest 3” system you can get but howels on boost!)
3" DN Performance Turbo Elbow (reduces turbo lag)
3" Magnex sliding Decat
3" Scorpion downpipe
HKS EVC 6 Boost Controller
AMS Large Intercooler (rated at 1000bhp+ and is the largest intercooler you can buy that fits without having to cut the front bumper)
HKS Racing Suction Induction Kit (sounds awesome and fits perfect with the HKS Hardpipe kit on the car)
BPR8ES Spark Plugs (gapped to 0.6mm) and will be changed every oil service
Walbro 255 Fuel Pump and extra noise insulation so it can’t be heard.

The work was carried out by Nads and his brother Sabs (mechanic) at Auto-Serve and I helped with the Boost Controller install. The car was also fully serviced using genuine Mitsubishi parts and I also used the following fluids (all bought from Opie Oils):

Silkolene PRO S 5W-40 Ester Synthetic Oil For High Performance Engines
Motul GEAR 300 75W-90 Racing gearbox and differential lubricant
Silkolene SILKTRAN SYN 5 75W-90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil
Fuchs TITAN ATF 4400 Automatic Transmission Fluid for Japanese cars

These were used for the Engine Oil, Diff, Transfer box, AYC and Gearbox.
The power modifications meant the car absolutely flew.

The next step was to get the car mapped properly using an Ecutek remap. I went to Matt@The Racing Line in Halifax a few weeks back to have this done. After braving the snow and dodgy looking icey roads the car arrived in Halifax.

Glad the car has 4 wheel drive!

Some of the roads to TRL:

Matt and his friendly team put it straight on the dyno and the car had made 365bhp!! That was an awesome result considering the car is 326bhp originally. The car was letting out flames too which look awesome!

The only bad point was that that I could hear a whistling noise from the car on the way to TRL and on the dyno - that was the standard plastic dump valve which was knackered according to Matt – it was leaking out air. I decided that if Matt could get me one I may as well get it fitted. Luckily he had a Forge metal one so it was fitted too (and I now get a quiet whoosh when changing gear).

Matt setup the boost controller properly and after some time mapping ( and me seeing lots and flames and lots of pops and bangs) my car had made 400.4bhp!!!! TRL’s rollers are pretty reliable too. That 313bhp actually at the wheels! Matt said the car was a very healthy example of an Evo and was running well. The other amazing thing was the torque actually peaked at 430ft/lbs on one of the runs!! (The MR’s have more aggressive cams then normal Evos).

I don’t know how to describe the car now apart from F Qqqqqqqqquick!!!! (If you know what the F stands for!) It just takes off and is hands down the quickest car I have ever had. It is just mind bendingly quick but you got to have the roads to enjoy it and the space. Still getting used to the power – but having almost 400bhp with 4wheel “grip and go” is awesome!!:thumbup:

I think Evo’s need to look mean and menacing on the street and I LOVE carbon fibre so I bought ALOT of carbon fibre for the car – I dare not add up how much it all cost but it was daft money!

- Genuine Mitsubishi Evo 9 MR Carbon Fiber front lip
- Genuine Mitsubishi Ralliart Carbon Fiber Vortex Generator
- Genuine Carbon Fiber Antenna
- Genuine Carbon Fibre Bonnet Vent
- Genuine Carbon Fibre Carbon Fiber Side Spats
- Genuine Carbon Fibre Carbon Fiber Side Extensions
- Genuine Carbon Fibre Carbon Fiber J-Panels
- Genuine Carbon Fibre JDM 9 Rear Carbon Bumper Extension
- Genuine Carbon Fibre JDM 9 Carbon Exhaust Shield
- Genuine Carbon Fibre Carbon Trunk Badge EVO IX
- Genuine Carbon Fibre CT9A Carbon Gauge Cluster

I personally think the car looks stunning with these additions (and the lowering and the AMS intercooler) and does make it look really special. I also bought some HKS Evolution Badges for the sides to replace the FQ-320
badges and have a genuine “by HKS” badge on its way from Ears Motorsport to finish off the back end. Nads also blacked out all the grills on the bumpers to make the car look meaner.

I have also fitted LED indicators with load resisters and have converted one of the reversing lights to act like fog light (SMD Super bright LED bulb again).

I have also had the windows professionally tinted out. Wink

Interior and finishing touches.

The dash cluster has had the Carbon Fiber surround and I didn’t like the standard gearknob so bought a genuine Ralliart Duracon one (it doesn’t get hot or cold in warm/cold weather) which feels much nicer. I also changed the centre light to a high brightness LED panel.

I had always wanted a car with gauges too (after seeing the ones in Gord’s/Duncans IS200 a few years back) so I bought a pillar pod and a boost guage and oil pressure gauge. Nads and I fitted these late one Sat night and after a few problems getting them to STOP BEEPING (:lolSmile they look awesome at night and work well.

The HKS Boost controller is also neatly fitted in the center console.

The main change however is the ICE......

The car gets better yet. Those that remember my IS200 I had a Car PC install in it which was not really that reliable and I had a lot of bad luck with it. This time, five years later I decided to try again.

I bought an Asrock 330 SFF PC which has a dual core Intel atom processor. I upgraded the ram to 4gb and replaced the standard 320gb hard drive with a solid state 128gb hard drive (so it can take the abuse in an Evo). I also bought an 8” Touchscreen and a IO Play amp to connect the PC to the cars speakers (I have no head unit anymore). I also got a specific car PC PSU and with Nads help to run the cables neatly we wired it all in the car and soldered everything.

Nads at work:

Interior Stripped:

I took the touch screen apart and mounted it into the back of a double din fascia I ordered from Japan for the car. The touch screen was glue gunned in and then I used cable ties and bamboo sticks to make sure it would stay in place.

I used Windows 7 as my operating sytem with Centrafuse 2 as the front end. The PC has been configured with T-mobile internet access, Wifi, Navigation, Speedcamera warnings, traffic camera images from the Highways agency, petrol prices, DVD, music, pictures, videos, Trip Computer and more. I customised everything to suit the car with the Ralliart logo and Carbon Fibre theme. I will start a new thread on the PC going into more depth if I get the time.

The PC turns on and off with the ignition........but there is MORE....... we also installed two cameras. One front camera and one rear camera. Both are high quality CCD cameras, the front is especially good with a Sony CCD and works well at night too. We installed a switch to flip the inputs on the monitor between PC, Video 1 (front camera) and Video 2 (rear camera).

I have been working for many hours on this system to get it stable and working well without electrical noise or interference. I will post a video of it working in the car. I was going to do it today but the batteries in my camera died!!

So there you have it guys.....my new JAP car and I am very proud of what myself and Nads have achieved so a BIG thank you to him for all the late nights at the garage and the work he put in to make it the best Evo he has ever worked on. My project has taken up a lot of time and money but the final car is awesome and was well worth the effort.

The car grips and goes and drives like nothing else I have driven. Now I need to learn to drive it properly..........
