We all know that garages try to rip off innocent motorists and I have carried out a little experiment to prove this moke:
Fault with car: The stud snapped inside the brake disc on the rear wheel, for those of you that don't know it is the studs that protrudes from the brake disc and then you put your wheel onto them and then secure it with the nuts.
Called up Lexus dealers to ask how much a the actual stud is...£2.17 excl VAT
Called up my local garage, they quoted me £250, said it is a very labour intensive job, they will need to take caliper off, disc off, drill it out, bla bla will take 3 hours, needless to say I told em where to go...
Called up another garage.... £45 if I supply the stud and will take an hour.
Called up the guy who services my Lexus at the local Lexus dealers/centre, he told me to come see him after 5 in the evening, and fitted it for me in less than an hour for very cheap!
Whats the logic, how can some run down garage be charging me 200+ when a guy who works for Lexus charges 1/10th of that! :Bazza:
This is my problem with indies - there are decent ones out there but there are about 10 times as many awful ones.
At Lexus you might pay a fraction more (and it's only a fraction) but it gives you peace of mind which I don't mind paying a little bit more for. WIM is the only non-Lexus place that I trust my car to, and that's because they're awesome!
Great result though
I think it depends how keen the garage is on the work. If the garage is busy enough already, then they are more likely to quote you over the odds, i.e. they don't really need the work from you. But if you can find someone who's more keen then you'll get a more sensible price.
Perhaps but 250 to less than 50 is a significant difference me thinks
Also, talking about WIM, I noticed that the outside of my rear tyre on the passenger side seems is worn out a lot more than on drivers side, what do you suggest this can be as I replaced both tyres last summer at the same time with Dunlop Sport Maxx?
Was the car tracked and set up when the tyres were replaced, or has it been done in the time since?
I find the passenger side tyres have worn more on my car, but i put that down to the large number or roundabouts i try to go sideways round...
Did WIM do the geo on that? Worth getting it checked out to see if anything's moved.......
iLLzLex Haven’t been to WIM, but when tyres were changed the guy tracked it and done the balancing not long ago ....

Yeah there's a big difference between simple "tracking" and getting a full geo checkup at WIM. WIM measure a *lot* more angles.
Tony from WIM said to me "Aligning to what????" when discussing "tracking" because the "laser" only aligns to the front/rear wheels not a fixed point - like the Hunter machine.
