Bsod
Hi,
Over the past few days, my pc every 3-4 hours or such, has frozen. A blue screen has then appeared, and my PC restarted. It did this a while back on XP where it would flick on (the blue screen) then restart. Although on W7, it stays on a little longer (still not long enough to read).
Im just wondering what causes this, is it overheating, hardware problems or software?
Thanks in advance
Jambo
A dodgy power supply can often cause this sort of thing (though of course there are other causes too). If it's happening regularly after so many hours then heat could well be connected with the cause.
Is it in quite a warm room ? How old is the PC ?
Do all the fans on the PC seem to be still working ok, including the power supply fan ? (try powering it on with the cover off)
Would be worth giving it a bit of a clean, e.g. take off the covers and clear off dust from the vents where the air is sucked in.
I agree with Stevie, that's first to check.
Second (IMHO) would be the software you're running at the time - BSODs can be caused by software trying to write to protected areas of memory and messing up Windows as a result. Anything consistent about the software running at the time?
Also worth checking your antivirus packages are up to date (and the spyware, malware, rootkit checker, etc etc stuff too) in case something on your machine is trying to be a bit malicious...
Will get an Anti-virus. A new Power Supply was installed about 3 week ago. Side cover is off and cleaned inside as much as i can. If it was over heating though it wouldnt restart would it? Just Power off.
The room is quite hot.
Ive changed some settings so when i get BSOD it doesnt restart, so that i can note down the code and see what it means
Thanks (y) Jambo
Why was the PSU replaced, was there a problem before ? I wonder if that problem is still persisting (e.g. motherboard ?) and the PSU wasn't at fault ? Or maybe the new PSU is faulty.
If it's overheating it might restart IMHO, who knows sometimes when weird things happen
The code might well be spurious if it's an overheating problem, but well worth checking out as you suggest.
Can you try temporarily moving the PC to a cooler room and see if the problem goes away, or at least changes in nature ? Might help confirm if it's an overheating problem, even if not exactly what is causing it.
Well windows 7 had a reboot thing on, so maybe it would reboot it anyway. Powersupply was faulty, so got a PC shop to replace it. The pc is about 6-7 years old and is running Winodws 7. I have opened the case, but cant even put a bigger fan on the heatsync of processor as its 1 size. The processor did seem rather warm but that might just be normal.
Im going to try and get a heat temperature software, so that i know what current things are running at
Dont think so, although the room is relatively hot aswell. Its now hitting around 49degC.
Obviously the problem lies else where
