A friend has a 2001 406 that wont start. It has power to all relevant systems, ecu, fuel/ign relay etc. It is getting fuel to the rail. But it still wont start. Im thinking its a lack of spark, but it has a coil pack, so its difficult to check the spark at the plugs.

Anyone know what i could check next

Because there are no HT leads. It is a coil on plug setup. The coil pack earths through the head, so it needs to be bolted to the engine to work

In that case I would just run an earth lead from coil to suitable ground point, it does not have to be a heavy connection as it only produces low current. then earth your spark plug to check for spark.
Fingers clear of course

Problem is i am certain there is no spark already. DOing this will just confirm what i already have an idea of. I just have no idea why there is no spark. There is power at the relay, as it is allowing the fuel pump to run.

I guess it could be a duff sensor, whi9ch if the ecu cant read it wont allow any spark, im just wondering if someone could confirm

I hear wot you are saying, sounds very much like a duff crank sensor not allowing switching, I will have a look on my works laptop to se if I can find a wiring diagram for the ignition circuit...
Peugeot 406
Year???
engine size?? please mate.
Try and do this tonight when I get home
