DIY or Pro tuning?
DIY or Pro tuning?
So I've got my Apexi Neo all installed and configured with a ~4% lean tune across the board. Obviously it's not ideal, especially when many people are reporting that the IS300 can be leaned out by 7-10%.
Question is...
Do I buy a wideband for about £150, have it welded into the downpide for £20, and then do all the tuning myself on an industrial estate late at night
Or do I take it to a pro place and get them to do it? I've no idea how much this option normally costs?
One thing that may have a bearing on the answer is that I'm putting some $$ aside for a supercharger for the 300. I'm hoping that I can install it myself - or with help from friends (as I certainly wont be paying garage prices), and at least if I've got a wideband already installed, I'll have an idea of whats going on.
Considering the damage a badly running engine can do and the costs involved in correcting it all later, the only question surely is do you know as much if not more than a quality pro tuner ?
Personally I see no point whatsoever on spending a penny on flashy performance kit if you don't make the investment to protect it all for the long term.

How much should i expect to pay for a pro tune with the car in its current N/A state?

Just emailed a local tuning place, and f*k were they about as useful as a chocolate teapot!
Me: Hi, Can you tune an Apexi Neo I've got fitted to my car.
Them: We can supply and fit a UniChip for £475
Me: Already got the Neo as a stopgap solution until I S/C. Can you tune it?
Them: Yes we can, but the Unichip can be remapped when you supercharge. For £475 total.
Me: I'll be getting a GReddy Emanage with my S/C, so I dont want to buy anything else. How much to map the NEO which is installed in my car already.
Them: We cant give you a price.
WTF, just WTF.
how can you run a company and not know your prices?
jim Does that mean you can't tune it, don't want to tune it, or don't know how long it would take to tune - and thus can't quote a price based on cost per hour * number of hours?
A simple answer without trying to sell me a Unichip would be cool. I just want to find out if I can get it done locally or if I need to drive down to TDI / AMD in Thurrock.
Kindest Regards
them I’m sorry but we do not want to tune it.

Be nice to say that from the start. I am sure you would have bought Moleys Unichip had you wanted to go down that route.
