Just had a quick look, for an amature looks ok, have a proper look on the bay, sure youll find something! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nikon-Coolpix-P100...5adf1e8665
Parthiban, Essex Racer and Bandit are in to photography so will be able to advise on what to look for mate
I'd recommend the D40 actually - it's newer and better than the D50 but may actually work out a little cheaper.
Phil01 cannon or Nikon??That's up to you really. If you ask a photographer who uses Nikon he'd suggest Nikon and a Canon guy would suggest Canon but they are pretty much the same.

Phil01 cannon or Nikon??It's a tough one, it varies a lot from camera to camera - on the whole they're very similar but looking at the individual models sometimes the Nikon is better and sometimes the Canon is better (according to reviews anyway)
P.Lindblom I've just ordered a Nikon D7000. When I get it Sara will be using my D80 which means I can sell my D40.That is very exciting! Really interested to hear what the D7000 is like - reviews have been pretty good, only downside is that it seems quite a bit bulkier than the D90.
Marsdendean I'm looking for a decent slr but if I bought one would it be ok without addon lenses for now?? Such as the d40 ??Depends really, 18-55 can be quite limited but I think it'll be fine to begin with. I've stuck with the 18-105 kit lens that came with mine and despite wanting an 18-200 I can't say I actually need one.

Phil01 seen a d40 on ebay with 18-55mm Nikkor Len Kit 4gb card 2 batts and infra red remote control for £260, does that sound a good price??I was thinking about selling mine for about £240, including an 8gb memory card, Nikkor 18-55mm lens and a camera bag. Not sure if that price is good or not
