I know a common problem, the LED's in the rear lights sometimes blow, next time you see an XF, have a look for blown LED's.
Parthiban,
One real particular problem, The gear selector control module will defo fail, so make sure you can check if this has been replaced under warranty.
It was not a recall as Jaguar seemed to think it was not safety orientated, they just waited for it to fail then replaced it with a modified unit.
Symptons are,,, gear selector knob will rise with the ignition on but you can not turn it to select gear, this will leave you stranded in the middle of the road with transmission locked. And at a cost of over £1000 CHECK it has been done.
Also electric handbrake module can fail, once again stuck at the side of the road with locked rear brakes.
Strangely enough, when you spin the wheels on ice or snow, the traction control gets all confused and shuts down the ECU, easy fix at the side of the road, all you need to do is reflash the Power train control module, (ECU) with the latest firmware, I must have done 20plus last winter.
EGR valves of the V6 Diesel.
Super charger boost solenoids.
Could be worth taking someone with you with the Dedicated Laptop and Jaguar software called SDD, plug it in and it will scan every single function of the car, even down to checking the audio speaker resistance, and the electric Aircon vent flaps.
And like Oli said, silly little thing. Check the Led's in the rear lamp units, stop lights as well as tail lights, I can virtually guarantee loads will be blown, something no one else notices but so obvious when pointed out.
I borrowed a Jag XF SV8 a few years ago. It's comfy and it looks nice but I really don't like the interior. It has a very cheap feel to it.
Here are a few pictures of the one I borrowed:
As you can see the ashtray lid was open. It was actually broken and could not be closed... and the car hadn't even left the dealer yet
XFR...Great cars mate, Driven a few of them and thats the Jag i would buy,
Phil01 has pretty much coverd everything. The gear selector control module and led rear lights are dogs poo, they tried cold solder to fix the gear selectors but did not work after a while so they replace the units now, Led lights always go on them but there under warranty. Another thing to feel out for is buckled rims, we seem to be doing a few lately, they dont take long at all to get get to 155mph
Very sexy cars IMO
Thanks everyone for the replies, especially Phil and mplavery as that's some really useful info. Didn't read anything about the gear selector being an almost certain failure on the jag forums which I find quite surprising! Does the handbrake problem have an improved version that should have been fitted or is that just something to watch out for? Also the supercharger boost solenoids (not really sure what they are), is that something that can be checked easily or should it be ok?
He's planning to buy from a Jag dealer, do you think they will be willing to plug the car into the computer in front of us to check all is ok or as it's a dealer is it likely they would iron out any faults that would show up themselves anyway?
Are the buckled rims on any particular types or on all of them? He's only looking at cars with the 20" rims like in Patrik's pictures.
The rear lights is one thing I've noticed myself on a lot of XFs so will definitely be checking that one
Re: the XFR, he is considering it but hasn't decided whether to spend that much more yet, the SV8 should be adequate but I don't think he's tried an XFR yet though so a drive might change his mind :tongue_smilie:
