Question: Is there a 240V to 12V adapter available that could replace the battery? I've been looking on the 'net but there doesn't appear to be anything available that would cope with the amperage.

Do we have any electronics gurus in the club? I have a stairway in the garage that joins the 'attic' room to the bottom floor. I have made it retractable so it stows away between the joists and frees up more space in the garage. It's solid wood construction and fairly heavy so it's pulled up and let down with a 12V DC 1hp winch, currently connected to a heavy duty car battery.

jimxms Computer PSU would be my first port of call. Depending on what wattage on you buy you can get anything from a 10A 12v rail up to 100A.
Probably not the cheapest method, but certainly reliable and easy to install.
Just happen to have a spare PSU, but I thought the amperage may be too low as the battery is a 400 amp. Don't know what the winch pulls, just that it's a 0.75 kW rated motor (1 hp).

So at the most we're probably looking at 62A.
But as Rabs says its probably best to get an accurate measurement as it could make the difference between a cheap £40 500w PSU, or a beefy 800w £150+ PSU.

A note on the computer PSU idea - I used to use this for testing car amplifiers I was repairing etc however a lot of computer power supplies use the 5V feed to stabilise the 12V feed. So you have to put something on it to create a bit of voltage draw on the 5V rail as well or the 12V will be all over the place.
I've got bench supplies for things up to 5A etc but I think they're probably too small for what you're after.

Good point toxo. You'll want a PSU that preferably has a dedicated 12v rail (more expensive) rather than the cheaper ones which tend to balance th 5v and 12v rails.
