One of our tv channels is showing quite a few episodes of Road wars every day and I enjoy wathing it. It's nice to see police officers going "Good afternoon, sir" instead of "SHOW ME YOUR HAAAAAAAANDS OR I'LL TAZE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!" *waving automatic rifles in the old lady's face* as in the American equivalent.

Anyway.. I was thinking about the narrator's accent. Am I right in guessing that's a Manchester accent or at least from that part of England?

Awesome! Thanks for the answers Smile I've never seen Coronation street. I think it was aired for a month in Sweden a few years ago, but nobody here watched it.

You've not missed much Smile I saw some Road Wars while I was in Belgium recently, it was very strange to me to have the police officers still speaking in English and then the narration between clips in Dutch!

You would think that but half of Belgium speaks French/Flemish and the other half speaks Dutch. Everything printed is in both languages... I actually have no idea what language the narration was in!

In Belgium, voice over is very rare but is always done in Flemish, they hate voice over as a country. Captions are always in Flemish - unless its a French film then captions are in English??????, but 99% of people speak English very well.

They learn French and English from the very beginning of school, its not an option. My mum (from Gent) speaks English, French, Flemish, Dutch, all native and Spanish like a tourist!! There are 2 sides to the country, the Flemish side and French side all it means is you swap from one language to the other fairly often during the day!!

Flemish and Dutch are different languages, but like Sweden and Norway a native speaker can communicate well using common words shared with each country.

In the capital (Brussels) it is an unwritten requirement that shop staff have to be able to communicate in French, English and Flemish - because its the centre of EU bureaucracy/parliament.
