Mr2 mods and advice
Mr2 mods and advice
Now i've got a job sorted I'm going to spend some money on the '2.
metal headgasket, different turbo, not sure what else?
I'm currently running around 250bhp (guess) and would like to be running around 320bhp in time for the jap show.
Can a ct20b handle 320bhp safely?
If so, what other mods would i need to get to that power?
and if not..what turbo would people recommend?
p.s-I'm keeping my mr2 now, not going to swap for a gt4 as i've recently been saying i would
Edit: Duh read your signature now
Metal HG involves taking the head off (obviously) so you should probably do the hose from hell while you're in there. Take a good look at your engine and think about what else has not been touched in a while, when was the last time it had pumps and belts done, that sort of thing. You can pick up a later spec turbo relatively easily as many people upgrade, but would you want to put it on without having it rebuilt? It will still be at least 15 years old.
A CT20b can *just* handle 320bhp safely but at that stage you need a serious intercooler, chargecooler and preferably water injection to stay safe. Even with an aftermarket turbo, you can only really push to 350bhp before you need to put stronger pistons in it.
With my sensible hat on, I would say to take whatever money you can put aside for mods, flog the car and add that money to your pot and buy a rev3/rev4 turbo. They're a better base for starting from IMO. They run lower compression ratios for higher boost, are MAP based not AFM and blah blah blah. Even the GT4 chargecooler and ECU are a straight fit. But we all know how people get attached to their cars so I know you won't sell it
Thanks for the advice, unfortunately you are correct. im in love with my mr2. i'd rather spend money on getting her to what i want than swap her for a rev3+!
I'll be getting luke@pacific works to carry out any work. in regards to the head gasket, he said he charges more than most people (£700), but for this price he gives it a good going over, he said it will be like a new head when it goes back on.
he did mention about using a different turbo if im looking at around 350bhp long term, i think he said a mitsubishi one? but they are around the £1200 mark, so id much rather just get a ct20b for now, and get somewhere over 300bhp in time for the jap show
That'll be a TD06-20g. Like this: http://www.atsracing.net/Parts/Index/TD06
I had one of those but never got around to fitting it. It will produce more power at the same level of boost that a CT2x would, as they are more efficient and don't overheat as much. Plus you can have a screamer pipe!
You should get a full head rebuild from Luke for that much. I did!
Remember you can get 320bhp out of a rev3 with a 1.15bar boost increase but they run more as standard and it's not just down to the turbo. You may not hit that with a rev1 running the rev3 turbo.
lol i know it would make sense, but im happy with my car now, just got the wheels aligned and feels fantastic like my n/a did..id much rather spend double in the long run and keep her. crazy i know..lol.
