DIY: How to install a reverse camera

I wrote most of this guide a few years ago. The camera I used is actually still available on Ebay. There are probably better ones available but if you'd like to use the same one it can be found here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310704994449 - It comes with all the cables you need to install it. In fact, the video cable turned out to be the perfect length for an IS200/300/Altezza.

Start off by folding down the boot lid trim. Do so by removing at least 9 of the 14 plastic clips

I usually use a small flat-head screwdriver, but there are tools specifically made for removing these clips.

Remove the four 8mm nuts and two plastic clips holding the license plate garnish. Two of the nuts are located under the black lid for the boot lock.

Drill a 21mm hole in the garnish. I can't tell you exactly where to drill the hole, but hopefully these pictures will give an idea. This turned out to be a good spot for this particular camera.

You don't need any glue or screws to attach the camera. Just push it into the hole and it will stay there.

I made a 17mm hole in the boot lid. It can probably be smaller, but I happened to have a 17mm rubber grommet lying around, so I made it that size. As long as you can get the RCA connectors through the hole you're good.

A grommet is not a bad idea. If you don't have one, at least paint the edges of the hole you made to avoid corrosion.

Replace the license plate garnish and then you're all set on the outside of the car.

Connect the cables in the boot lid. The yellow RCA connector goes to the video cable that comes with the kit. The red one wants 12V and ground. I connected mine to the license plate light wires. You could of course connect it to the reverse lights, but I wanted to be able to use the camera while driving.

Never mind the orange wire. That's for the fog to tail light mod.

Tuck away the wires and secure them to avoid any weird rattles while driving.

Run the video cable along the black wiring conduit.

Remove the boot lid arm trim to gain more access.

The black, stiff cable is the boot release cable. Follow that with your video cable and you'll end up at the front seat. Continue through the footwell and all the way to the back of your DVD player or monitor.

Unfortunately I ran out of time when doing the install so this is the last picture I took before I was finished. Hopefully you'll find your way to the stereo.

Here's the end result. Whenever I shift into reverse my stereo switches over to the camera and then switches back when I stop reversing. The music keeps playing without interruption.

If you look closely you can see the edge of the rear bumper at the bottom of the screen. This is great as it gives you a very clear perception of how far you can reverse before you hit anything.
