Engine options
So, as some of you already know my engine blew a couple of days ago. Now I'm trying to figure out the best route for me to go and would much appreciate your thoughts in the matter.
I have a few options to choose between.
Firstly, and probably the most reasonable choice, is to salvage the car and just buy a new one.
Pros: Easy
Cons: End of my beloved car and maybe not so economic.
Second is to put a 1jz/2jz in it.
Pros: A great engine, get rid of the old ***** 1G engine. Able to get some bhp out of it.
Cons: Expenisve swap. Alot of hassle. Gearbox is expensive. Hard to get the in car electrics to work. Needs a fully stand alone ECU management? And passing the MOT with turbos can be tricky.
Third one is to just buy another 1gfe and swap it. Although it seems like a lot of work for absolutely no gains..
Fourth option, and the one I'm leaning towards atm.
Buy a used 1G-FE engine and upgrade it some before putting it in. Then run it with supercharger and greddy emanage.
I'm thinking forged rods and pistons. Although I can't find any forged pistons.
Rods I've manage to track down and for a reasonable price as well.
Pros: Easy. I already have 1zz 250cc injectors, supercharger, lightweight flywheel and a new clutch-kit. Will also pass the MOT (just take of the charger).
Cons: Will cost some with no huge gains.
Regarding the pistons. I've understand that 1ggte internals would work, but those seems to be impossible to find anymore. Although I've read that Honda guys with D16 engines also used 1ggte pistons. It's just a thought, but If 1ggte pistons fit in Honda D16, wouldn't D16 pistons fit in 1gfe? If so, there are plenty of forged pistons for the D16 engine to buy.
Otherwise is there enough goods in the original 1GFE pistons that it's possible to machine some off to lower the compression?
Would be great if you share any information you have regarding the 1gfe engine here aswell. Thanks.
Btw, do you think 280bhp is reachable with a supercharged 1gfe (as a daily).
Before you do anything set a budget!
Be prepared to break it for thinks you've not planned for but set a rough budget.
In terms of option 4. Personally looking at the finish in pictures I'd avoid the cheap rods being offered on Facebook.
Yes gte are hard to find, and I think the pin on the D16 piston is larger than the gte so you can't fit that way round (Honda boys bore the hole bigger I believe)
Lots of people are running 0.7bar on standard engines now, so if you're sticking with the tte style charger I'd stick with the standard engine.
