What is your model number of your camera ?
Are you thinking for Marco close up or portrait pictures.
Don't order a lens unless you know what you really looking for or you could waste lots of money.

You have to take good care of the camera and lenses, worth buying filters for you lenses.

Hope you enjoy your NIKON
Do you have the manual to read?

As above which camera has he given you? As a guess I'm thinking it must be a D80 if he's just upgraded (I keep hearing of people upgrading from those)?

Yeah the 70-300 isn't going to be a great help to you - the best all round lens is the 18-200mm (thinking of getting one myself) but as you've discovered it's around £600 I think.

I currently have this 18-105 which was the kit lens with my camera - it's actually fine and to be honest I haven't needed a longer zoom than that yet.

I'd personally stick to Nikon with the lenses, they are actually better (hence the cost) - the sigma ones can come close in terms of quality, but the ones with vibration reduction end up costing almost the same as the genuine nikon ones.

I have a Nikon D40, and although i havent used it much i think its a great camera. The standard lens that comes with it is an 18-55mm which is fine for close range stuff. These are available on ebay etc for reasonable prices
