Coil pack is definately a possibility. They are pretty weak especially awhen they get to a few years old. A rise in temp normally kills them. But i wouldnt trust anything a garage monkey says unless he has got it plugged into a fault reader. You could end up wasting a fortune
Marsdendean If its a coil pack, drive it nice and slow and be easy on the power.
My mate had a W reg corsa and when he tried to boot it, engine check light came on and hardly any power.
Just take it easy if money is a problem, he drove his for around 3 month light that. A good rev seamed to help his now and again!!

Marsdendean ^^ Does it kind of misfire when the engine light comes on, and won't rev normally?
Like i said, my mate had a corsa who was running around with a faulty coil pack for months! He had a peco exhaust, and was quite funny when he used to sit there and try to get rid of the light! I remember i lent it to go blackpool, tried to overtake a car doing 80mph, and ended up slowing to 60mph because of the darn light!

wohoo, got the coil pack today from ebay used, fitted it myself took like 10 minutes and works perfectly ! (well not perfectly as got problems with exhaust, but thats been like that for about 6 months lol)
well chuffed and amazing how easy a coil pack is to fit on a astra ! would have about 40 quid to garage for labour, knowing them
only made one mistake, to take the cover off you got to take the engine cap off, when i started it and revved it, forgot to put the cap on, and oil went everywhere lol, but cleaned it all out, and topped it back up !
