toxo Not a wire as such. My understanding is that because the car is built LHD, the brake servo and master cylinder are on (what in this country would be) the passenger side, instead of just at the top of the brake pedal where they would normally be. So instead the brake pedal operates a cable on the RHS which is then attached to the master cylinder on the LHS. So you can apply pressure to this cable with your foot from the passenger footwell.

oh come on its not just French cars, the RHD Beetle has a similar issue - whereby the passenger can accelerate the car accidentally - far more dangerous. there is an after-market cover plate for this issue but not a VW one.
