I recently got the 2011/2012 sat nav updates for my car stereo which is a Kenwood double din touchscreen unit with built in Garmin satnav. In order to take the new maps it needed some software updates first. I thought I'd write it out here because I know some other members have similar stereos!

The stereo and the satnav are internally 2 separate units. So they both have software that needs updating. You must update the stereo first, then the satnav.

Step 1: Update Stereo

Get the software update from Kenwood. These are in a few different places depending on how old your stereo is.

http://www.kenwood.com/usb/info_program_en.html for units released in 2007 (eg mine, DNX-7200)
http://www.kenwood.com/cs/ce/mm/firmware/2008/eng.html for units released in 2008
http://www.kenwood.com/cs/ce/mm/firmware/index.html for units released in 2009 (eg DNX-9240BT)
http://www.kenwood.com/cs/ce/mm/firmware...index.html for units released in 2010
http://www.kenwood.com/cs/ce/mm/firmware...a/eng.html for units released in 2011

Download the .zip file with the latest software for your stereo. For a DNX-9240BT this would be http://www.kenwood.com/cs/ce/mm/firmware...r1.9.0.zip

Check your current version of the software. On the stereo, go into the Settings menu (Spanner Icon), then Information, then Software. If the version is less than 1.0.9 then you need to update.

Now, some stereos update from USB and some from CD. The DNX-7200 updates from USB for example, where the DNX-9240BT will only update from CD. This is how to do the CD update:

Extract the contents of the .zip file you downloaded and burn the files onto a CD. They should be in the root of the CD, not inside a subfolder, and there shouldn't be anything else on the CD.
START THE CAR AND KEEP THE ENGINE RUNNING.
Put the CD you've just burnt into the stereo. Select the 'StandBy' source - pausing what you're listening to is not enough, it must be on stand by.
Go back to Settings -> Information -> Software. There will now be an Update button - press it. The update takes about 25 minutes and you should have the engine on the whole time.

At the end of the software update your stereo will restart. Go bak into Settings -> Information -> Software and make sure it now shows the new version of the software.

Step2: Update Satnav

Now that the new Kenwood software is installed, you need to install the new Garmin software. For this you need an SD card.

Go to the Garmin website for Kenwood updates, find your model, and click the Software Updates link next to it: http://www8.garmin.com/products/kenwood/

Check the latest version of the software on the website. For a DNX-7200 this is 2.9.0, for a DNX-9240BT it's 3.50.

Switch to satnav on your stereo and hit Settings -> About -> Software. If the version of Software Version shown (not GPS version) is less than the website then you need to update.

When you click Download on the Garmin website you will have to agree to set of terms and conditions, and then you get taken to the download page. From here you can download the latest software as a .exe file. Once you've downloaded the exe double click on it to open it. Click Browse and select your desktop. This will put a file called GUPDATE.GCD on your desktop.

Make a folder on your SD card called GARMIN and put the GUPDATE.GCD file inside this folder.

START THE CAR AND KEEP THE ENGINE RUNNING
Make sure you've got the satnav displayed on the stereo screen. Fully open the front face of your stereo by holding down the eject button. This will reveal the hidden SD card slot. Put the SD card in. The satnav software will automatically update and restart (Mine doesn't show any progress bars or anything while it's doing this, it just freezes until the update is done). Once it's updated, go back into Settings -> About -> Software and make sure the correct version is displayed!

You can then get the Garmin City Navigator maps update. The cheapest place I've found to get it from is actually direct from Garmin at https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=...pvID=88431 The update comes on an SD card which lives permanently in your satnav.

Once you have an SD card, you can use the data on the website pocketgpsworld.com to add speed cameras to the satnav. They have a user-contributed database of over 13,000 speed cameras for the UK. It costs £20 a year to subscribe to the service, which gives you free updates for that year. See http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/uksafetyca...enwood.php This is actually Kenwood's recommended way of getting speed camera data, as it saves them having to maintain their own list of cameras!

Oh I forgot, you must use an SD card for the Garmin software update, not SDHC. So it must be 2GB or smaller. This is because not all the units support SDHC out of the box, so you have to update the software to enable SDHC support. This is particularly important because as of 2011 the map updates come on SDHC, so without the software update you can't use the new maps.
