Lexuspat I'd be very surprised if its anything other then air in the systemI agree, it definitely sounds like air in the system. The easiest way to bleed the brakes is probably by using one of these

Check the manufacturers instructions for the correct order, not all cars bleed the same way. Also get one of those one man bleed kits, much better then pumping the pedal.
i have a draper one but it not working very well, going to have a look at what halford have tomorrow
yea but think its had it lol, will have to try again tomorrow, what is the correct way to bleed the is200 as people are saying diff things
I have genuine lexus workshop manual for the IS300 (USA spec ) and it points to an extra bleed nipple on the ABS/TRAC /VSC actuator, this is the silver block with all the brake pipes coming out of it, just in front of the master cylinder. may no be relevant to UK spec but worth a look.
Did see that but didn't want to undo that and open a can of worms having to bleed the abs pump then
no dont touch it!!
how are you bleeding the brakes??you doing it yourself??the only fool proof way is to do it two man....
1)get your wife, lover, gay friend into your car
2)make sure the level is above max
3)slacken the bleed nipple get the person in the car to pump the pedal 10 times and on the last pump hold the pedal to the floor and tighten up the nipple..you MUST hold the pedal DOWN on the last press then tighten up the nipple..(it doesnt matter were you start or if you have the engine running)
4)now move on to the next nipple and repeat the above steps but remember keep an eye on the fluid...
5)job done
so when your pumping do you have to open and close the nipple on each pump or just up and down while the nipple is open
