toxo I always got told you shouldn't use anything like wet n dry or wire wool on stainless. I have discolouration on my MR2's silencer but half hour's elbow grease with autosol always gets it off
Wet and dry is silicon carbide, same as the micro mesh polishing cloths albeit the micro mesh is available in finer grades.
Resistance against discolouration of stainless and/or corrosion will also depend on the chrome content of the stainless. Steels with a chrome content of more than 11% are referred to as "stainless", but for use in ambient outdoor conditions 13% would be regarded as the minimum, with up to 26% for the more arduous conditions. Most exhaust systems are manufactured from AISI 306 grade with around 18% Chrome and 8% Nickel content.
Polishing "stainless steel" with any kind of abrasive will remove most discolouration or corrosion and the protective layer of chromium oxide quickly reforms to be resistant against further attack, a process known as passivation. However, this will not protect against galvanic corrosion or pitting corrosion usually caused by direct and continuing contact with a disimilar metal, so the stainless parts need to be insulated against the latter by the use of non metallic hangers, gaskets and stainless bolting.

Best thing that I`ve found is Dodo Jucie Supnatural Fine Metal Polish comes with an aplication cloth that has different varient of harshness on either side. It is a little bit expensive and if you find that the cloth won`t get rid of a tough spot get an old toothbrush, this will give a bit more of an agressive clean without scoring or marking the SS.
