Thought it was about time that I cleaned my MAF as I'm sure its done 50k miles without being cleaned and my K&N oiled filter has probably been taking its toll.

I've bought some MAF cleaner (CRC brand i think) which suggests you just spray on and leave it, but is that all that's needed or is there a way to achieve better results?

i used electric contact cleaner stuff and worked a treat on the MAF, also i cleaned the inside of the throttle body as well, that made a big difference tbh mate there was quite a bit of dirt and stuff coating the inside of it. iused some carb cleaner stuff on the TB.

Did you literally just spray on and leave the MAF - I've heard they are quite delicate?

As for the TB, was that just a case of taking off the airbox and getting in there with some cleaner and an old rag?

I've got the seafoam treatment lined up for the car as well.

yeah the maf is a bit delicate but no different to any other electrical component with its thin wires and super small switch or what ever it is inside. with the maf i unscrewed it from the intake pipe and when its off you can see the little metal sensor/probey type bits hidden inside i put some rag into the MAF where liquid could escape and then used the can of spray cleaner with the little plastic nozzle tube to spray into where the sensor parts are and filled it up with spray and and pulled the rag out and with a earbud qtip thing, just gently wiped the probes and made sure it looked cleaner and was all dry before putting back on.
With the TB i was surprised how much dirt had got in there it was all mainly around where the flap opens up inside and it was quite possibly not opening fully either. once it was all off i again put a rag in one end filled it up with carb cleaner let it do it stuff then get the rag and wipe all the dirt out. and it runs a lot lot better again now.
let me know how you get on with the seafoam stuff as i might have to give that a go at some point.

plus if your taking the TB off it may be easier to change the spark plugs as well whilst your there as getting to the plugs is a pita. and as changing the plugs involves taking the TB off anyway it may save you taking it all apart twice.

Hmm I've got a 60k service coming up soon which includes changing the sparkies. I wonder if they can clean mt TB at the same time as I don't think I can be arsed to strip it down. I've heard its a right pig.
