Does anyone know if there is a time limit for claiming council tax?

Just received a bill for erroneous charges dating from 2005-2008 for a property that was sold in 2008. There have been no previous bills (as these charges should not exist) - I know I can fight this and win but just want to make sure whether I even need to bother if it's too late for them to be asking for money.

Is it 5 years or something?

2tongues Is it 5 years or something?

I was thinking 5 years as that's a general rule of thumb, but was hoping it might be shorter.

Either way I think I have an annoying battle ahead........:Chair:

What they want is £4.5k so a tidy sum.........

The annoying thing is that the house was let to the council, so they are fully aware of what the situation was, just the general lack of any coherence between council departments is to blame (and their own incompetence in this case).

That and I assume the funding cuts from the new govt has made them go after any penny they can find. Should be able to clear this up, just know it will be an annoying drawn out battle though.

you should phone the citizens advice and get the right details so you know what you are up against

Essentially the story goes that it was let to the council, the tenants being w*****s destroyed the house (which had been refurbished only a few years prior) in order to be re-housed in a bigger house (which they were :madSmile. At the time we refused to pay to refurbish again, council said the house was unfit for habitation, and terminated the housing agreement.

From 05-07 this is how the house remained, and on discussing with the council tax department at the time, they told us that a house in this state is exempt from council tax (which it is) and we didn't need to pay. Then through the latter half of 07 the house was refurbished, and in early 08 sold on, and again they told us no council tax is due as there is a 12 month exemption for houses undergoing renovation.

I have no idea why they are coming after this now, having agreed no tax was due and not having sent a bill until now almost 6 years later.
