Evening all

My car's done a fair few miles now and the gearbox is making a bit of a whine when the clutch pedal is up. It may well just need an oil change but it prompted to me to think, what sort of mileage do these 6 speed manuals take before they need work?

No idea of the previous use but I suspect it's been too bad as they car os pretty good overall.

Thanks in advance

If your getting whining when the clutch is up then it's probably just the release bearing and nothing much to worry about. Nothing you can do for it anyway and not worth dropping the gearbox just to change that. Would normally be done as a matter of course when changing the clutch.

I think the gearbox is pretty much bomb proof.

Thanks for the feedback..........I figured that the release bearing was one part of it, but I also thought that when the clutch was engaged the gears are held together?? (Hence no vibration)

Good news about the 'bomb proof' gearbox. I'm still getting used to all of the engine and gearbox codes after years with GTR's and M3's. The last thing I needed was a chocolate gearbox in there!!

I put 300 bhp through mine, stav has his monster and rabsters is is putting a good 280 through his, all 'boxes are fine. The 'box's only cost 300ish 2nd hand any way so its no big deal if there is an issue. The part that can fail is the main thrust bearing under the nose cone of the box, its cheaper to replace the whole box, but it can whine for ages until it leaks and damages the clutch its not a common thing to fail.

Whining when the clutch is *up* wouldn't be the release bearing, that would be when the clutch is *down*?

I'm not sure as well, but when the clutch is up, its under less pressure so would whine, but when its down the pressure could stop the whining?

So it's an AZ6 then, same as the S2000, MK3 MX5, RX8 and the S15. I see how they would be easy to get hold of!
