ormi As long as the bulbs have a pattern and alighned correctly you CANT fail a car fitted with hid's!! I will repeat YOU CAN'T. their is not a ruling yet on aftermarket hid's..theirfor they are tested as normal lights..end of...
Until their is a mot ruling the only thing they can fail for is beam pattern or poor alignment...

I know, you're right. My major gripe is with HIDs retrofitted to reflector housings, which are really hard to get a correct beam image from, in which case sometimes they will fail. I have had a car fail on this before.

ormi And their is already a way round failing for aftermarket hid's....hide the balasts you can't see you can't fail..the reason the tester is to look for the balasts..

Pretty trivial to just jack the back end of the car up while it's on the brake tester and see if the headlights self-level, innit? I know that's not strictly tested for but as and when there is a ruling on it self levelling will be the thing to check as it's very difficult to retrofit.

I do agree with you theirs too many people just slap these things on and never get them checked.when I fitted mine I spent ages getting a good pattern and kick off so I wouldn't get flashed at...
Just mot testers hands are tied unless their is a fault ie poor pattern.

One thing everyone is overlooking,
On Hid's its not all about correctly aligned headlights its the amount of excess light scatter that is a major problem, yes you can have a correct beam aim with the correct kick up to the left but in a poorly designed reflector/ lens the amount of hot spots/light scatter is huge, especially with H4 Bi-xenon's all this equates to is glare. in a properly designed headlight that will be running hid's this issue is designed out of it from the manufacture.
Fact-After market HID will produce more glare/scatter than halogen and this is what is causing the problem

Um, just a quickie about self levelling. By the time they have self leveled, they have normally blinded who ever is coming the other way anyway. The LS is goos at doing that with it's projector lights and my old GS did the same. Self leveling headlights normally can't keep up.

Headlight washers? They make dirty headlights wet with soapy water then the dirt dries anyway.

If you fit HID's, make sure you have the beam tested and adjusted. I had them fitted to my old Micra for three years without a problem and it passed the MOT with no troubles either.

what difference does the thread age have to do with it, still a very current problem as more drivers are converting to Xenon

I've been flashed by a fair few people who seem to think I've got full beams on. Thats with factory auto-leveling HID's too!

Not had any more trouble since putting the eyelids on tho :p
