Fukushima 50
Fukushima 50
Heartbreaking what is happening to Japan.
Unbelievable heroics from those people at Fukushima.
What doesn't break you will only make you stronger.
From a decimated country after 4 years of war in the 40's to a technological and automotive giant in less than a century is phenominal.
The Japanese are strong workers and proud people, nature might hinder them but it will not defeat them.
Marsdendean I know this is a dumb question but how do we get energy from it, how does it all work ??

No because the water never touches the radiation - in the UK anyway........
As Stav previously said UK reactors use CO2 to be heated by radiation, then transfer they heat to the water. The Japanese one the water is heated directly, to I have no idea just how much radiation is transferred in that process????
What I do know is these power stations are protected like military bases because of their strategic nature. Lord help us if terrorists decide they are fair game.
Fairly safe though so long as EVERYTHING is done by the book and human error is eliminated as far as humanly possible.
Well said 2tongues. In general the water will pick up some radiation but it will decay fairly quickly.
The problem in japan is that the fuel got so hot the metal cladding that holds the fuel pellets in has melted so small particles of the fuel itself is in the water. This is contamination and because its physical so to speak it stays a bit longer and gives off it's own radiation.
