Btw, I'm not sure in the truth behind this, but I was told that when I had an accident, If I didn't place a claim with my insurer then if the other party claimed for whiplash at a later date, I'd be personally responsible for their healthcare bills!

So even though my excess was £750 and the repairs were just shy of £1k, I still put it through insurance Confused

You have to tell your insurance company anyway as you have had a claimable accident. Jimxms it also right if you choose not to go through the insurance then they will not pay out for whiplash etc.

You don't have to claim, but they have to be informed of any accident - I'm not sure about the personal liability, it's probably more just the case that they will deny cover because you didn't inform them of the accident.

How old was the mondeo?? if old then cant you pay off the owner and save going thro insurance??, could work out cheaper if you take into account the years it will take to recoup your lost NCB

Even if there's no claim made Phil, he still has to tell the insurer about it, and that'll push up the cost anyway...

Though I suppose telling the insurer but nor claiming can't lose the NCB anyway...?

hmm, if thats the case, is it not worth bunging it all through insurance and getting them to sort it all out?

Why pay out of your pocket to fix the mondeo and your lex if you've only got a couple of years NCB to loose which probably wont make much difference to the insurance cost on a cheap run-around car?

Most insurers will ask "have you had an accident in the last x years regardless of fault" anyway.

Personally I'd take the £750 excess on the chin, let the mondeo guy go to wherever he wants to get his car fixed. Take your lex to an authorized bodyshop and also be safe in the knowledge that if Mr Mondeo claims for whiplash, you've done everything through the insurance so there's absolutely no chance of a comeback on you.
