My mate has a 2004 Mazda RX8. It is the 231bhp model, but he had the engine replaced with a 192bhp a while back. Clock currently shows 37000miles.

However, recently he has had problems with the engine cutting out when in neutral. he cannot sadly verify what milage the 192bhp engine had on it so he doesn't know if he needs another new engine or if this is a common fault thats occurring ?

Anyone got experience of the RX8's and maybe have some answers.. all the garages he has gone to want investigate , investigate, investigate and at a cost !

Fitting an engine of unknown mileage or history is never a good idea! Though I expect you know that. Especially on these engines, as they need fully rebuilding with new internal parts, IIRC, at specific intervals.

Not sure why it would stall in neutral? Do you mean it stalls at idle? If you pop it in neutral and rev it, will it still stall? Does it need to be left in neutral for a while?

If I had a problem with my RX8 (or RX7 for that matter) I would look up the number for Dragon Performance and give them a call. Friendly helpful guys and I believe the UKs leading RX7/8 specialists.

It you were changing engine then ideally it should be like for like.

I think the plugs are another problem as they do break down.
They are known to drink lots of oil and it said that you should every month redline them.

Who's idea was it to remove what is essentially the top of the range engine, and replace it with the basic spec one? TERRIBLE idea.

Was there not an issue with stalling with the 231bhp engine, when moved only a few feet and turned off, something about the engine flooding. This could be part of the same issue, only because its a swap the ECU's may not be operating properly.

Phil that true about the engine stalling but i think it was only when the engine was cold

The engines are very prone to flooding when switched off when cold.
They say to rev the engine and hold it 4krpm for 10seconds before switching off.
But this isn't flooding it's stalling so presumably will restart???
If it floods it's a pain in the rear unlike just a hassle with a piston engine.
