What you need to do is get the car up on some ramps (i.e. in the air, with the weight on the wheels) and then have a good going over all the suspension and drive components (propshaft, driveshafts, cv joints, bearings, bushes, wishbones etc) til you can find something that moves around when it shouldn't!

I haven't unfortunately, I do everything on jacks and axle stands!

I'm happy to take a look at it though, if you like. Am fairly familiar with IS200 suspension, including eliminating rattles from it :lol:

try this: and this goes for other members also.....

engine running, car still, shake steering wheel left/right. do you get a knock sound?

I wouldn't say I get a knock sound, but it is a bit clunky when switching directions using the method described above.

then the plastic universal joint that allows you to move the steering wheel up/down is worn. No replacement parts are available, toyota only supply a complete inner steering shaft at about £400.

you can remove the column in 20 mins.
