So you lot are all saying I should have picked something I dont enjoy, yeah? Something boring where I wouldn't put all of my heart and soul into it, where I wouldn't put 100% effort and concentration in? The college doesn't just have a room to take pictures, you use older cameras, get the negatives, they even have a dark room to develop the negatives. So I shouldn't do this because you say so?
That's 2 threads in a day I've seen criticism, now I remember why I stopped posting.

Thank you to those few who didn't criticise me for doing something I enjoy. Like lee, dean and terry...

Oli I think your taking this the wrong way everyone has said well done,

However they are telling you about the real world where options are very limited and by only doing a single course will restrict what job you can get.

Its all about diversity nowadays.

No one is critising you more giving advice on what may lie ahead

Aww Oli.. chill... this is a mammoth decision for you and it's really really tough to decide at 15 what you might want to do for the rest of your life.. especially if you don't have a burning life long ambition Smile I remember the trauma myself ..

I think people are surprised you've chosen something totally creative mainly because you've proven to be so academically minded until now. It's surprise not criticism, with maybe a little bit of concern that maybe you are capable of a high earning technical/academic job and photography is not an easy career to make big money in these days.

It's a tough world out there darlin, and sadly gettting more so by the day. I for one don't envy the starting path your generation face and feel for you big time.. don't take offence at us .. this is concern because we care not criticism x

If you find a job that pays the bills and you love, then wtg you honey.. few are blessed with that wonder .. (and we're jealous lol)

I'm glad your doing something you enjoy, however I will say one thing Darks rooms and negative film is almost obsolete as almost all profesionals use DSLR camaras and Photoshop

Just can't seem to win tbh, whatever I do is always wrong in the eyes of everybody. If I hadn't had chosen photography and part time work it was either working full time or doing sixth form full time where I wouldn't have done something I enjoy.

It's a horrible horrible time .. My parents had decided I was going to be a translator for the united nations as I had way too many O'levels and spoke over ten languages. I had enough of school and didnt want to do any more study or exams. They threatened me with college/university or getting kicked out of the house. That backfired on them, I took the first job I could find and left home within a fortnight. I did it out of pure stubbornness. As it happened it set me off on a career that has treated me well and I was lucky. Like Rabster, time proved that practical experience meant more than qualifications on my particular path.. but in retrospect, I could have easily made a lot more money a lot easier and quicker had I followed other routes .. would I have been happy? Well that's always a big question.

People just want to help you avoid the traps they fell into but certainly once you stand on your own two feet and financially support yourself your life and your choices are totally your own.. All anyone wants is for you to be happy, especially your family.. don't forget that Smile Listen to what they say (or fake it lol - sorry Phil, I didn't really mean that), take it on board and do what's right for you at the time Smile

Well done for doing something you enjoy. At the end of the day, you're still young, and even though people have their concerns, you have plenty of time to see if it works for you...and if it doesnt, you'll still be at the start of your life and the world's your oyster.

Though I have to say, I've learnt the hard way. I thought i always wanted to be self employed, not have a boss breathing down my neck..that was my dream. I tried it...it worked, but not well enough. and now im at the stage in my life when everything is changing, I have to move out this year, possibly children the next couple of years, and i need money. If only id stayed in employment i'd be in a good position by now, and debt-free.
However..i don't regret it, because it's all made me who i am.

Do what you feel is right, but also know that nothing good comes without dam hard work!
