hi all have a 98 scooby sport non turboi and have a problem with the idle it ticks over at 1200 -1400 and the check light is on error code 31 thorttle position sensor do i need a new tps as i changewd it for a second hand one but still have the same symptons have changed alll the vaccum pipes and dont have any air leaks any ideas any help wud be appreciated

Have you calibrated your new TPS? I.e. set the point where the idle switch closes etc?

I'd do what Toxo says, try reseting the ecu (removing the battery is the easiest way) and see if the ecu learns the new TPS position

The 2 screwholes the TPS fits to the throttle with should be slotted so you can rotate it slightly. The TPS has a microswitch in it (usually referred to as IDL) which should close ONLY when the throttlebody is shut, i.e. when you don't have your foot on the throttle.

You need to rotate the TPS very slightly and gently until IDL only closes when the throttle pedal isn't being touched, and the slightest touch of the pedal opens the IDL circuit again.

Once you've got it right, nip the screws up, fully depress and release the throttle pedal a few times and then re-check.

This is how the ECU knows that you've taken your foot off the throttle and to engage idle mode. I expect it's seeing idle conditions (i.e. no air unless it opens the idle air control valve) without the IDL switch being shut, and thus throwing an error because the 2 conditions conflict with each other.

Here's a Toyota one, if that helps. I imagine they all use the same Denso unit.

The IDL circuit is between IDL and E2 if I remember right.
