Hi everyone, sorry haven't really been around much lately, been quite busy plus the car is getting fairly neglected.

Another random PC question which is now the norm from me, can I simply connect a wired network switch to one of the ports on my router and extend the number of wired connections, or is not as simple as that?

Basically using something like any of the items on this page:

http://www.comms-express.com/categories/...-switches/

Thanks!

yes. but your better buying one that can take all you connections and just plug the switch into the modem. or like i did and get one of these
http://www.provantage.com/netgear-fvg318na~7NETR01J.htm

then you just use the modem as a bridge if your running telephone or tv from your modem. if not the just run the netgear one on it's own. 8 ports and wifi

You can do. I use a netgear router and netgear switch box and it works spot on.

Just to say there isnt much between switches - as such Netgear Prosafe is a little overkill for the home........

Something like this will do just fine:http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduc...16&subcat=

I'm running a TPLink Gigabit router with one of their gigabit switches and it works perfectly and I get the same transfer rates between PCs as between drives inside my PC :-)

Perfect, I'll get one ordered then.

Thanks Ed, ones I was looking at were around the £45 mark, that's an even better price point Smile

Thanks for all the replies :thumbup1:

I'm with you toxo.. Bought a cheap netgear switch for about 20£ all in and connected it to a home network plug behind my av system and now have my ps3, sky box and apple tv running on it.. Slightly cheaper that some others I've seen, but works just as well

Ah now for homeplug I have a homeplug adaptor with a 4 port gigabit switch built into it, so it does both jobs and only takes up one mains socket.

So is there no real difference between the really cheap switches and then the ones around the £40-50 mark? (ignoring the ones over this as that really would be overkill)

No. Just make sure they can handle the traffic. You want a gigaswitch. 10/100/1000 will handle everything without crashing.
