I thought id put this thread up to show the difference between the engine pistons and rods.

Right tonight i took out the gte rods amd pistons of my spare engine as theyre sold. Here they are ready for the new owner:

Whilst I was at it I took a piston out of the 1ggeu engine I also have:

1ggte on the left, 1ggeu on the right.

They look similar but the gte look stronger! The pistons also have slight differences around the pin.

However the 1ggeu are a definitely an improvement on the standard fe ones, here's a pic of an fe rod with the ones IKEngineering sell.

So if anyone is just going for modest figures the 1ggeu ones could be a decent upgrade if anyone is interested in the set I have?

Toyota moved to that thinner design of rod when they put VVTi on everything mid-late 90s. Any -FE engine with VVTi has rods like that. It makes the whole rotating assembly loads lighterbut it makes it useless at power increases. 1UZ is the same!

Agreed! There are some photos around that show the 1UZ differences which look almost identical to yours! I have a set of both, for now mine still has the thin ones in it though.

Haha, this fills me with confidence for around march time when I will be hoping to push around 250 after I install all my bits!

Knowing how the rods look I think il be having a constantly worried look on my face whilst driving now. Smile

cheers for the scare .but there most of been a reason why there curved them like that on the sides may be add strength ie spreading the loud out but still scary tho. ive seen rods similar in design like the stock once in high end sport bikes .

At 250bhp you shouldn't have a problem. Lots of people run up to 300bhp in stock FE rods. It's past that where you WILL have serious problems.

The 2JZ ones are the same, the late spec (vvti) GE engine in the IS300 has rods half the strength of a GTE Surpa. Luckily they can still handle over 400bhp. Smile

Confusedad: It was a tough call to make, but the Supercharged IS200 is being retired. Confusedad:

Yeah I have seen that quite a few people are running around 250+ with stock rods, not sure of the figure untill all the work is complete but I would imagine it will be between 250 and 280 at the crank, don't want to push my luck

Stav, how much do you want for the geu rods? If they will fit the FE pistons then they should suit me.
