Has anybody got a list of what is needed for a 1JZ-GTE swap?

I've read that to do it properly you would need about £5-£6K but im just wondering how the costs are made up? and if anybody has a list of everything needed?

thanks

It has been done I think if you do a lot yourself then your in the right ballpark with costs.

Got a s/c 200 atm and it's spotless. Only think letting it down is power so would be a conversion or nothing. Seems to me like there's a lot more conversions done abroad anyone know why that is?

If you can do a lot of the work yourself then it can be kind of affordable, especially if you use a standard (BPU'd) engine and auto 'box, but if not then the costs can really escalate. The engine isn't the hardest part to come by, but can get pricey if you rebuild it and/or do a twin to single turbo conversion etc. Manual R154 gearboxes are rare and expensive and the V160 'box, which is the one you really want, is £2.5k on it's own! Standalone ECU is £1k+ and can be £500-1000 more for wiring it in and mapping. The electrics are very complex on any engine conversion in any Lexus, but getting the aftermarket ECU working with all the Lexus instruments correctly can take some people months! If you are not a wiring genius then you will need to pay a pro, and pay them quite a lot.

I'm had a supercharged 200 for many years, but have now decided to get a 300, and though I'm not ready yet, I will be looking to turbo the 2JZ, as an alternative to transplanting another engine into a 200.

If you are going to spend money on a 1J, get a vvti version in the first place. It's already single turbo and it's a better engine. Fewer tuning parts available but you might as well start with the right lump. It's also worth noting that I've seen at least two examples of 1JZ-GTE vvti engines running with an IS300 ecu and a piggy back, which might be easier/cheaper to sort out on your own.

But the vvti 1J has the lighter (weaker) rods, does it not? Will give up under big power? Was that an auto IS300 ECU or a manual one from the States? If money was no object I would have a vvti 2JGTE from an Aristo, built with pre-vvti rods (which can also run on an IS300 ECU) mated to a V161 6 speed 'box. But money is an object, and one I don't have much of, so I am looking to turbo the 2JZGE that I already have.

I know of a 1J conversion with big single (James', formerly Sam's) that is fully running and just in for a rebuild and boost upgrade at the mo to 600+, with an R154 gearbox. Another (Chris') who is not quite finished but nearly there, running stock twins and auto 'box and one more that was on ebay recently for an obscene sum, with a military style paint job. To my knowledge, that's it, three of them. And as far as my research can tell, there is, so far, zero "NA-T" turbo'd IS300 2JZGEs in the UK.

Auto IS300 ecu. There is one example on driftworks and another one some Asian language forum. I'll see if I can dig them out.

The NA-T route on the 2J will be just as good as having the factory GTE and will cost the same amount of money in the long run. The ridiculous premium you'd pay for a factory GTE engine could easily be matched in after market NA-T mods for the same money. You can also get GTE rods for absolute peanuts.

Get a JZ to 370z 6 speed adapter, the ratios are nigh on identical to the V160 and you will struggle to destroy one of those.

There are a lot of NA-T converted IS300's in the states, my.is would be a good place to start. It's nigh on identical to the supra NA-T route.

Well, if NA-T is better than GTE will always be arguable either way. The GTE has stronger rods, for sure, and aftermarket bits are easier to come by, but the GE is said to have a better flowing head, though needs compression reduced for higher boost levels. I know GTE rods and pistons can be chucked in (from someone upgrading their drag supra!) but I am hoping, at least initially, to go turbo without cracking the engine open.

The 350/370z box will fit onto a 1j/2z with the right adapter, however, this will NOT mount right onto an IS due to the transmission tunnel clearance required. As I understand it, the mods the the transmission tunnel would be serious and not practical (for me anyway) and yet to be done, that I know of.

I know the weak link of my setup will be the auto box, without some upgrades to it, and I don't have R154 or V160 money. A little more power the rods would implode too. My plan, or at least stage one, is to turbo with maybe a GT45 on low-ish boost making around 400hp on stock internals, compression and gearbox using a Greddy EMU. Of course from there the possibilities are almost endless with further upgrades and bottomless pockets. But I don't have bottomless pockets and 400hp in an IS as a daily is all I could ever really need.

I have already done a fair bit of research on my.is and facebook chatting with a few turbo guys over there. Won't go into this much further as it's slightly off topic (upgrading stock engine is not "Engine Swaps" lol) and will start my own thread on this for in depth discussion soon.
